this is a better look and shows the top of his helmet hit before anything else:

I think the hit is clean. His shoulder hit the guy. I don't see the head leading. The head is behind the guy. The first picture also clearly showed the ball out. He never had control of it inbounds. It wasn't a catch.
Tennessee got screwed in everyway possible to end this game.
How was that hit even debatable? He led with his helmet, launched himself at the WR who couldn't defend himself, that hit wasn't even close. Christ, even if it somehow was clean, you don't put yourself in that position for it to even look like it was a penalty. The game should have been over long before any of that happened, but UT blew it by not converting and winding down the clock, so put a little responsibility on them instead of saying they got ripped off - which is really stupid because it's not like the whistle was being blown every two seconds the other way. UT choked that one away every bit as much as any calls costing them anything.
Launching himself isn't against any rules..... His helmet is behind the reciever. He didn't hit the guy in the head. Hell this is football we are talking about isn't it. I mean can someone even hit somebody nowadays. We are a decade away from playing flag. It is a joke. There was nothing dirty about the hit. It was just a good lick. A good lick that knocked the ball out. The pictures show that. I mean just because you don't like Tennessee doesn't mean you have to be blind to what happened in that game.
The field goal/spike play was another screw up that cost us the game. There where clearly 12 set when the ball was snapped. That is a 15 yard penelty. That is the rule. Is that debatable? Also the rule book says when the offical calls the game over. It is over. That isn't me saying that. That is the rule book. Is the rule book debatable? Is that stupid? Hell no... Hell no it isn't stupid.
There was more. The ruling about the "Catch" being completly wrong. But after that. The clock should have started after the ball was placed and ready for play. It didn't. That was wrong.
I agree UT did make some mistakes. The biggest one being the missed extra point. Also not playing three deep at the end instead of cover two wasn't very smart when the other team doesn't have any timeouts. But even those mistakes didn't lose this game. We would have still won if the officals new the rules and didn't completely blow the last 30 seconds of the game for us.....
The top picture provided by Vols61 is the intial contact. The receivers head then whiplashes back and they make helmet contact then. Its a split second deal, but contact was intiatated with the shoulder first below the receivers shoulders.
